‘As It Ever Was’: a poem for the Royal Wedding
April 29, 2011
AS IT EVER WAS
—
Like so many of his countrymen
Victor found himself
amidst the fanfare of the Royal Wedding
moved to tears
*
Not, like so many
overcome
by high emotion
but because
at the tender age of eighteen months
he had
once again, it seemed
soiled himself
*
‘Just a moment, darling,’
his mother cooed
‘Just let Mummy watch the wedding,
Then we’ll get you changed’.
*
And so
as it ever was
the Monarchy paraded about,
lording themselves over the nation
whilst the little man
could only regard his lot
and choose
between vociferous protest
and quiet indignity.
